Stars to shine for breakfast at JCC Sunday June 29

The stars will shine next month at the annual breakfast meeting of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven, which is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center in Woodbridge. Edith (Edie) Goodmaster will bring those stars to the Sunday, June 29, event with her talk, “My Life With the Stars.” The event is scheduled for 10 a.m..

Edie Goodmaster worked at the Shubert Theater for 25 years with the legendary theater manager Maurice H. Bailey, when the Shubert was the launching pad for such Broadway hits as Oklahoma! The King and I, South Pacific, Carousel and The Sound of Music. Along with anecdotes about the stars she met during her theatrical career, Ms. Goodmaster will speak about the influence of New Haven’s Jews on the local theater industry, both legitimate theater and motion pictures.

“Edie Goodmaster is full of stories about her life in the entertainment industry, and the stars, directors, and people she worked with especially at the Shubert,” said Historical Society President Rhoda Sachs Zahler. “I first met Edie when I interviewed her for the video archives of the Jewish Historical Society. Her stories about eventful opening nights and behind the scenes events reminded me of the era when my parents drove from West Hartford to New Haven to see Broadway musicals at the Shubert.”

Goodmaster, who serves as the Jewish Historical Society’s treasurer, has been honored by a number of synagogues and organizations in greater New Haven for her work in the Jewish community. She also has been honored for her efforts on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry in which her late husband, Edmund E. Goodmaster, worked as a registered pharmacist.

The meeting will include a full breakfast and will include the society’s annual meeting at which a new slate of officers will be elected and installed. The cost is $15 for Jewish Historical Society members and $18 for the public. All are invited to attend. Reservations are required, and may be made by calling the society at 203-392-6125 or e-mailing to jhsgnh@yahoo.com. Registration forms are available on the JHS web site at www.jhsgnh.org. Checks may be sent to the JHS, PO Box 3251, New Haven, CT 06515-0351.
