Urban renewal extinguished a star in the Hill neighborhood. It has reappeared, for good, in a new home in Westville.

The star was born in the central window of the old “Rose Street Shul.” That was a synagogue on a little street near what’s now Yale-New Haven Hospital. The entire street, including the synagogue, perished in the mid-20th century bulldozer-driven assault on New Haven known as “urban renewal.”

The old synagogue spawned two successors across town in Westville, where much of the Jewish community was moving: the conservative egalitarian Beth El Keser Israel (BEKI) on Harrison Street and the Orthodox Westville Synagogue on West Prospect Street. Both congregations are still going strong in the 21st century.

The image of the star from Rose Street’s window inspired the design of a colorful new work of stained-glass installed above the Harrison Street entrance to BEKI. An official dedication of the window is planned for this Sunday.... Read the whole thing

** ORCHARD STREET SHUL CULTURAL HERITAGE ARTISTS PROJECT

Exhibition: December 6 2009 - January 31, 2010

Introduction

Historical narratives have a long tradition in visual art, literature, and film. The narratives serve to stir the imagination of both the author and the audience and in the best examples, the works hold to the rigor of historical accuracy. The Orchard Street Shul Cultural Heritage Project is in this tradition, a project building on the past while using the resources of inventive new technology and social networking to form a community of creative visual thinkers, designers and researchers focusing on different facets of how we document, interpret, and retell cultural legacies.

The Cultural Heritage Project brings together a diverse group of regionally and nationally noted professionals working with a trans-disciplinary methodology, whose work is inspired by community, neighborhood, history, architecture, and cultural tradition. Collectively and individually, the group is creating visual, written and sound works exploring and engaging with the history and changes of the OSS, contributing to its heritage and furthering a dialogue on its cultural relevance and role in an evolving urban community.

Exhibition: December 6 2009 - January 31, 2010

This collaborative effort will result in an exhibition to be held at The John Slade Ely House in New Haven, Connecticut in opening on December 6, 2009, and continuing through January 31 2010, additionally supported through an exhibition catalogue. The exhibition will be a collision of history and art in which the past unfolds the present to reveal what the future may hold for the OS and its neighborhood.

Artists are researching their projects through a variety of means including archival documentation, consulting with current and former congregants and area residents, creating their own records using photography, video and sound and translating original data into 3D scanning that aids in keeping cultural heritage alive.

Cultural heritage is fluid concept, and we hope to expand on the notions of what the historic Orchard Street Shul site means for creative artists from all cultural backgrounds.

Scream the Truth at the World: Emanuel Ringelblum and the Hidden Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto

May 4 - June 20

On September 18, 1946, evidence of the destruction of Polish Jewry, ghetto life, and Nazi brutality was pulled from the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto. The Ringelblum archive, as the materials came to be known, is the most important source for, and the most poignant testimony to, the destruction of Polish Jewry.

Scream the Truth at the World: Emanuel Ringelblum and the Hidden Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, curated by the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust and the Jewish Historical Institute, Warsaw, will be on loan to the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut from May 4 through June 20. This is a stop on a national tour for the exhibit, which was originally on view at the Museum in New York from November 7, 2001 through February 18, 2002, and subsequently appeared internationally, including venues in San Francisco, California, Houston, Texas, and throughout Europe.
